416 stainless is a martensitic stainless steel with added sulfur to improve its machineability. As far as stainless steel goes, 416 offers the best machinability with fair to good corrosion resistance and excellent surface finishes, so it’s great for manufacturing studs and threaded rods, valve stems, gears, bushings, and other high-volume, precision-machined parts with complex geometries where magnetic properties are desired. If additional hardness is required, 416 can be annealed to achieve around 40 HRC.
